Aguero vs Villa

Aguero is the future plain and simple.

Putting aside my bitterness that he's 3 months older than and going to the World Cup, he will be the next great South American forward in my opinion. Any player who can remain at the basket case which is Atletico Madrid can still retain the potential for greatness cannot be over looked. At 21 he offers great skill, a good scoring ratio and the hope that old Maradona himself will turn up in support.

Aguero possess the raw talent to turn a game around almost single handed. Anybody who saw his influence in Atletico's victory over the all conquering Barcelona saw a special talent which could prove itself against arguably the 'Greatest Club Side Ever'. For both his goals he swept past Puyol and the rest of the defence to calmly place the ball in the net. It is important to remember he ability to move through defences is through the grace of his talent rather than brute force. His low centre of gravity is akin to the other great Argentine players of past and present; Maradona and Messi. The ability of Argentina to produce such player is astounding and Aguero is the latest.

While this argument while not charm many it still rings true regardless. Aguero is young, at 21 he offers the best value for money in this current financial situation coupled with the price inflation which the spending sprees of Real Madrid and Manchester City has caused. At his ages the 35m Euro fee which any of these player's clubs would demand would be far better spent on the raw potential of Aguero rather than the finished product of David Villa. At 28 is arguably the best striker in the world but it would be hard to justify the enormous price tag for a player of this age with little resale value after.

At Real Madrid he could be the long term successor to Raul and the partner for Benzema at Madrid. A roving attack of him, Benzema and Ronaldo would be devastating, a partial replication of the fluid system that Man Utd used in 2007-2008 season where all the attackers could freely move causing havoc for opposition defences.

VS

WHY MADRID SHOULD HAVE GONE FOR VILLA THIS SUMMER:

While the entire world drools over the idea of Ronaldo and Messi battling it out for the Pichichi this season as the planets two best players in the world’s two best teams David Villa has done what he has always done for more than a decade. Quietly and efficiently score more goals than anyone else in La Liga (he is currently on 12 this season). There is no question that Karim Benzema is a very talented striker but his 8 goals in 22 appearances in all competitions (albeit, not a bad return for someone in a new team and country) does not compare to Villa’s 19 goals in 28 this season. Neither does Aguero’s 12 in 24. While I freely concede that both Benzema and Kun Aguero are superb players and have good records, David Villa is simply the best striker in the world. With 186 in 336 appearances and a goal tally of over 15 for 8 consecutive seasons (on 12 by January this looks likely to be extended to 9 this season) Villa has a consistency and natural goalscoring ability unmatched. No other striker in Europe has come close to this record.

Benzema and Aguero have one major advantage over David Villa. They are respectively 6 and 7 years younger than the Spaniard. Now football is one area where it’s okay to like the small, young and innocent but Aguero was not the right choice for Madrid. Madrid are not a selling club. This summer Perez was the only man to outspend the Petro-dollars of Man City. They do not need to be looking at the sell-on value on players such as Ronaldo, Kaka and Benzema. Perez built his presidential campaign on the idea that he would bring ‘La Decima’, the tenth European Cup. Madrid fans crave the tenth title even more since the glory Barcelona enjoyed last season. And if Madrid were to come up against the Chelsea defence that provided an (almost) flawless exhibition of how to shut Barcelona down in the final, if I was Pellegrini, I would be choosing Villa over either of the other two any day. It boils down to the trade-off between spunking 35m on a player who may do the business or, in 18 months time be struggling in Serie A a la Huntelaar versus a guaranteed goal haul of at least 15-20 a season from a proven thoroughbred. Indeed if Perez decides to treat his players as he has his managers, he might as well install a revolving door in the dressing room so Villa’s age wouldn’t be such an issue. And while Villa has been serviced by players such as Silva and Mata, he would no doubt flourish even more when receiving service from Kaka or Alonso.

The final reason for signing David Villa is to serve the political plotting on which Real runs. When unceremoniously dumping Calderon out of power Perez came back with the promise bring more Spaniards back to Madrid. Scapegoating the Dutch contingent of the squad, trying to flog van der Vaart, van Nistelrooy and Sneijder to any bidders, El Presidente promised to bring back a more homegrown touch. Not wishing to repeat the ‘Zidane y Pavon’ fiasco, ‘homegrown’ merely meant that they would be Spanish, rather than actually (God forbid) Madrid’s own. Villa satisfies the supporters urge towards nationalism better than a Frenchman or an Argentine could and then there’s the minor fact that he’s phenomenal.

The Tragedy Of David Villa

Hi

The inaugural debate is a timeless one, out of the forwards Real Madrid could of signed. Should it of been?
  • The 'I don't really try' Frenchman Karim Benzema
  • The 'All round Mr Nice Guy tm' David Villa
  • 'You know football agents are already tracking his kid' Sergio Aguero
We are both going to be arguing for one of the players.

Please feel free to comment/insult/heckle David for child support

Hi

Comrades and Friends,

Welcome to our new football blog, we'll hopefully be posting our thoughts and ideas (plus whatever we can pass as our own) on the this site.

We are going to be combining our two passions; football and hatred for each other into debates/verbal jousting/bitch fights on football topics such as;
  • Who is better Ronaldo or Messi?
  • Who will win the World Cup?
  • Will the Game Podcast ever shut up about Liverpool?
